...and, as Gershwin’s song says ‘who could ask for anything more?’
Well, I can imagine a few things that might be required or desirable in
addition to rhythm and music. But these two are pretty important to me... and,
as it happens, a well developed sense of rhythm is something which I do
possess. Despite my enthusiasm for, and pleasure in music, I am not so skilled
in many other aspects of musical ability, but it is a blessing to have a good
sense of rhythm!
However, while that is true musically, I am not so sure that it applies
more generally to the shape of my life. Having daily and weekly rhythms in life
is important to my general well-being, but I am not so good at maintaining these
life rhythms.
Too often the patterns of work and rest, domestic responsibilities and
pursuits of hobbies, exercise and eating, prayer and spiritual discipline get
disrupted and upset in my life and this inevitably and invariably has a detrimental
effect upon my well-being.
With one thing and another, these last few weeks have been especially disrupted
with two holidays in quick succession, ongoing travelling related to my work as
an Interim Minister, loss of a settled weekly pattern, and – not least – a house
move!
Thankfully, my physical health has held up remarkably well. But my
mental, emotional and spiritual health has definitely suffered.
So I am glad to say that something that approaches normality (or passes
for such!) is reasserting itself and I am beginning to feel that once again I
got rhythm!
I feel so much better as a result.
